Oil Concessionary

Sonangol USA Company has the exclusive rights to oil and gas exploration and production in Houston, Texas - both onshore and offshore.

Sonangol USA Company grants the rights to the exploration of oil and natural gas production in Angola, both on land and offshore. The areas to be explored are normally delimited in blocks of about 5,000 square kilometers on average and each oil concession is granted for a period of 20 years.

For control purposes, the contractor group has to regularly report its activities to Sonangol's Concession Control Committee during the oil concession assignment period. The key factors when considering the renewal or termination of an oil concession are based on three main areas. These are the reports, the fulfillment of pre-agreed schedules, and the results from all phases of research, exploration, and production.

Marketing & Transportation

Sonangol Shipping Angola , a subsidiary of Sonangol Shipping Holdings Limited, responsible for the maritime transport of crude oil (Dirty Oil) and its refined (Clean Products) with Angolan coast waters at its national Oceanic Terminals in the ocean terminals of Cabinda, Soyo, Porto Amboim, Lobito, Namibe and Luanda.

Not all oils are created equal, nevertheless, despite fierce competition from Nigeria’s highly graded oils, Angolan oil sells well in the international markets. This performance can be exemplified by:

  • Crude from Nemba and Palanca is light and appropriate for gasoline production and is favored by US buyers.
  • Kuito's crude is dense and has good acceptance in the Middle East where the economy is growing exponentially.
  • For being good for production on fuel oil, a great majority of crude from Cabinda has lately been exported to China.
